AC Milan is back at the table for Mattia Liberali. The Serie A club has scheduled a videocall with the teenage midfielder’s agents to discuss a potential transfer, barely a year after letting him walk out the door.
Liberali, who turned 19 in April, left Milan for US Catanzaro on a permanent deal back in August 2025. Now, the Rossoneri apparently want him back.
The numbers behind a potential return
When AC Milan sold Liberali to Catanzaro, they retained a 50% stake in any future resale proceeds. That means if another club, say Como, were to buy Liberali, Milan would pocket half the transfer fee anyway.
Liberali’s current market value sits at around €8.5 million. His release clause with Catanzaro, however, is set at €6 million. Given Milan’s 50% resale stake, the effective cost to bring him home could be significantly lower than what any competing buyer would face.
His contract with the Calabrian club runs through June 30, 2029. The videocall between Liberali’s agents and AC Milan officials was scheduled for June 30, 2026.
Why Milan let him go in the first place
Born on April 6, 2007, Liberali came through Milan’s youth academy and was considered one of Italy’s most promising young midfielders. When Milan offered a contract extension, Liberali turned it down, leading to his permanent transfer to Catanzaro on August 8, 2025.
One detail that underscores Milan’s seriousness: Liberali has reportedly been in direct contact with AC Milan’s current manager, Ruben Amorim. When the head coach is personally engaged in transfer discussions for a teenager, it signals more than casual interest.
Competition from Como and what it means
Milan isn’t the only club circling. Como is also reportedly interested in signing Liberali. Reports from June 29, 2026, confirmed both clubs as active suitors.
If Como triggers the €6 million release clause, Milan would receive €3 million of that fee automatically via their 50% resale stake.
The release clause of €6 million, offset by Milan’s 50% stake, makes this one of the more financially straightforward deals on the summer market. Watch for movement in the coming days, particularly after the videocall results filter through to Italian football media.
