AI-related layoffs drop to lowest monthly total since December 2025

The AI layoff machine appears to be downshifting. In August, companies attributed 3,462 job cuts to artificial intelligence, the lowest monthly figure since December 2025. AI still accounts for roughly 22% of all layoffs reported so far this year. The August number represents a dramatic retreat from just a few months ago. In May, AI-related job losses hit 38,579, representing 40% of total layoffs for the month and the highest level of AI-cited cuts since tracking began in 2023. The numbers behind the slowdown By May 2026, cumulative AI-related layoffs for the year had already reached 87,714, according to data from Challenger, Gray & Christmas. That figure blew past the full-year 2025 total of 54,836 in barely five months. Roughly 54% of all layoff events in 2026 have cited AI or automation as a contributing factor. In 2025, that number was under 8%. Oracle delivered the single largest AI-linked workforce reduction of 2026, eliminating approximately 21,000 roles, about 13% of its total headcount.
