Alphabet, Tesla shares fall as AI spending raises investor concerns

Shares of both Alphabet and Tesla dropped in premarket trading on July 23 after each signaled that their appetite for AI infrastructure spending has grown considerably larger than investors were prepared for. Alphabet fell more than 4% in after-hours trading following its Q2 2026 earnings report. Tesla saw shares slide nearly 3% on the news and has continued to face market pressure since. The numbers that spooked the market Alphabet revised its full-year capital expenditure guidance upward to a range of $195 to $205 billion, compared to a prior estimate of $180 to $190 billion. That is an incremental commitment of roughly $15 billion on top of what was already a historic spending level. Alphabet’s property and equipment spend reached $44.9 billion in Q2 2026 alone. The company’s cloud revenue growth came in strong, surpassing 80% year-over-year. Alphabet’s free cash flow has turned negative as a result of this capital expenditure level.
