Anthropic evaluates building in-house payment infrastructure, weighing reliance on Stripe

Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude family of models, is actively exploring whether to develop its own payment and billing systems rather than continuing to rely entirely on Stripe. The company’s Billing Platform team is running build-vs-buy evaluations across its financial infrastructure, a process that could reshape how one of AI’s most valuable startups handles the money flowing through its products. Anthropic posted openings for a Staff Software Engineer on its Billing Platform team. The role’s scope includes ownership of pricing primitives, payments infrastructure, contracts, entitlements, revenue pipelines, and reconciliation. The job description specifically references evaluating build-vs-buy decisions while “leaning heavily on third-party providers such as Stripe.” Right now, Stripe handles a substantial portion of Anthropic’s financial plumbing. Payments collection, invoicing, subscription management, checkout optimization, and revenue data syncing to BigQuery all run through Stripe’s infrastructure.
