Apple just made its clearest bet yet that the future of consumer hardware isn’t about ownership. It’s about monthly payments. The company launched “Apple Upgrade” on July 28, a leasing program built in partnership with Klarna that lets customers pay monthly installments for iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and Macs instead of buying them outright. iPhone leasing starts at $17.99 per month, with Apple Watches beginning at $11.99. The move effectively kills the old iPhone Upgrade Program and extends the subscription model across Apple’s entire product lineup. How Apple Upgrade actually works Customers can choose lease terms of 12 or 24 months for phones and watches, or 24 or 36 months for tablets and computers. At the end of a term, they can upgrade to a new device, keep their current one, or return it. Early changes may come with fees, which is standard for leasing arrangements.
