Arsenal and Hamburger SV are actively exchanging figures in negotiations over a permanent deal for Fábio Vieira, the Portuguese midfielder who turned heads during his loan spell in Germany’s second division. The two clubs are far apart on price, which is the polite way of saying HSV wants a bargain and Arsenal wants something closer to what they originally paid. Vieira, who joined Arsenal from FC Porto in June 2022 for around €40 million including add-ons, has become a case study in Premier League transfer economics. A player bought for a hefty sum, underperforming at his parent club, excelling on loan, and now caught in the gap between what one club can afford and what the other refuses to accept.
