Aston Villa eyes João Palhinha as Bayern Munich opens door on cut-price deal

1 hour ago 2

Aston Villa is circling João Palhinha as a potential midfield reinforcement this summer, though the club hasn’t pulled the trigger on a formal bid to Bayern Munich. The Bavarian club is reportedly willing to part with the 31-year-old defensive midfielder for around £21.2 million, a figure that should catch the attention of anyone who follows football’s increasingly volatile transfer economics.

Bayern paid €51 million plus €5 million in add-ons to sign Palhinha from Fulham back in July 2024. Two years later, they’re looking at roughly half that to move him on.

The numbers behind the discount

Palhinha’s current estimated market value sits at approximately €24.9 million. For context, that means Bayern is essentially willing to take a loss of more than €30 million on a player they acquired barely two years ago.

Palhinha’s playing time at Bayern has been limited, enough so that the club sent him on loan to Tottenham Hotspur during the 2025-26 season. He remains under contract at Bayern until 2028.

Villa, meanwhile, is in exploration mode. As of mid-July 2026, no official approach has been made. No formal talks. No bid on the table.

Why Villa makes sense as a destination

Aston Villa’s interest in Palhinha isn’t random. The club is actively looking to bolster its midfield ahead of the 2026-27 season, and a proven defensive midfielder with Premier League experience checks several boxes simultaneously.

Palhinha already knows the league. His time at Fulham before the Bayern move established him as one of the Premier League’s most effective ball-winners. The loan spell at Tottenham means he’s been in the English football ecosystem recently enough that reacclimatization wouldn’t be an issue.

At £21.2 million, you’re getting a player whose peak transfer value was more than double the current asking price. The caveat, of course, is age. Palhinha is 31.

Recent claims that Palhinha has already signed with Aston Villa have been debunked, so nothing is imminent. Villa reportedly views Palhinha as one option among several midfield targets.
