Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana suffers serious knee injury at FIFA World Cup, raising questions for Sorare NFT holders

Amadou Onana’s World Cup took a brutal turn on July 6 when the Aston Villa midfielder crumpled to the ground while defending against Christian Pulisic in Belgium’s round-of-16 clash with the United States. He immediately grabbed his right knee, and the sight of him limping toward the locker room told the story before any medical report could.

Belgium won the match 4-1, but the celebrations were muted. Coach Rudi Garcia described the injury as likely serious, with early assessments pointing to significant knee damage. The question now is whether Onana will be available for Belgium’s quarterfinal against Spain.

What happened on the pitch

The injury occurred just 19 minutes into the match. Onana was tracking Pulisic’s run when his right knee buckled. He went down hard and stayed down.

Garcia, speaking after the match, didn’t sugarcoat it. He acknowledged the injury appeared serious and cast doubt on Onana’s availability going forward in the tournament. As of July 7, no official ACL diagnosis has been confirmed.

Onana has dealt with a string of soft-tissue injuries throughout the 2025-26 season, including hamstring and calf problems that have periodically disrupted his availability for Aston Villa.

Onana’s rising trajectory, now interrupted

Onana, who turned 24 last August, joined Aston Villa from Everton in 2024 and quickly became a cornerstone of their midfield. In May 2026, Villa won the Europa League with Onana playing a pivotal role.

On the international stage, Onana has been a fixture since earning his first senior caps in 2022. He appeared at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and Euro 2024 in Germany.

What this means for Sorare and blockchain fantasy sports

Onana’s NFT player cards exist on Sorare, the Ethereum-based fantasy football game that allows users to buy, sell, and trade tokenized player cards tied to real-world performance.

As of now, no notable price drops or trading volume shifts have been reported for Onana’s Sorare NFTs. If the injury is confirmed as an ACL tear with a six-to-nine-month absence, the cards would lose their competitive utility for the remainder of the current fantasy season.
