Aston Villa has won its appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport to register 17-year-old forward Brian Madjo, overturning FIFA’s earlier decision to block the transfer. The case centered on FIFA’s Article 19, a regulation designed to prevent the exploitation of young players by prohibiting international transfers for anyone under 18. Villa signed Madjo from French club Metz on January 12, 2026, for a reported fee of around €12 million. FIFA said no. Villa took it to CAS. What FIFA’s Article 19 actually does The regulation makes exceptions in specific cases. Players can transfer internationally if their parents move to the new country for non-football reasons, if the transfer happens within the European Economic Area for players aged 16-18 with proper safeguards, or if the player lives close to a national border. Madjo’s situation is layered. Born on January 12, 2009, in Enfield, London, he holds Luxembourg nationality and had represented Luxembourg at senior international level before switching to England’s U17 setup.
