Benfica is closing in on a deal worth approximately €7 million for a 19-year-old left-footed center-back, adding yet another piece to what has become a comprehensive defensive overhaul this summer. The move would mark the third center-back acquisition of the transfer window for the Lisbon club, which has been aggressively restocking after losing two pillars of its backline. A summer of defensive upheaval Benfica’s shopping spree at the back was born of necessity. António Silva departed for Bournemouth in a deal worth an estimated €25-30 million. Nicolás Otamendi, the veteran Argentine who provided experience and steel, also left the club. The biggest outlay so far has been Alessandro Circati, signed from Parma for a fee in the range of €18-20 million. Then came Gabriel Índio, a 17-year-old Brazilian center-back signed from Athletic Club in Brazil for €4-5 million.
