Bitcoin ripped 5% higher to touch $81,000, fueled by a cascade of short liquidations totaling $140 million across the crypto derivatives market. The move is a textbook short squeeze: traders betting on lower prices got caught offside, their forced buybacks became rocket fuel for the rally, and the cycle fed on itself. The squeeze mechanics Short liquidations occur when traders holding bearish leveraged positions can’t meet margin requirements as prices rise. Their exchanges force-close the positions by buying Bitcoin at market price, which pushes the price higher, which triggers more liquidations. In certain sessions during this rally, short positions accounted for roughly 80% of total liquidation volume. The liquidations hit hardest on major platforms including Binance, Bybit, and Hyperliquid. One particularly violent session saw $280 million of the total $409 million in liquidations come from short positions alone.
