BitMEX to shut down after 11-year run that reshaped crypto derivatives trading

BitMEX, the exchange that essentially invented the crypto perpetual swap and let degens trade with 100x leverage before that was a normal thing, is closing its doors for good. The platform announced on July 23 that it will cease all operations on September 23, 2026, at 04:00 UTC, ending an 11-year chapter in cryptocurrency history. New account registrations were halted immediately. No new positions will be allowed after August 26, and any remaining contracts will be forcibly closed after the final shutdown date. From market king to footnote At its peak in 2018-2019, the exchange commanded over 50% of the entire cryptocurrency derivatives market. Daily transaction volumes hit as high as $8 billion, with annual trading volume surpassing $1 trillion. The exchange, operated by Seychelles-registered HDR Global Trading, was co-founded in 2014 by Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo, and Samuel Reed. Their perpetual swap contract, which let traders hold leveraged positions indefinitely without expiry dates, became the single most copied product in the industry.
