The US labor market just got a quiet regrade. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its preliminary benchmark revision on August 28, 2026, showing that total nonfarm payroll employment for the year ending March 2026 was overstated by 79,000 jobs, a correction of 0.1%. Private employment took a slightly larger hit, revised down by 178,000 jobs, also 0.1%. What the revision actually says This year’s revision is the smallest since 2021.
