Burnley advances talks to appoint Nicky Hayen as new manager

Burnley FC is deep in negotiations to bring in Belgian coach Nicky Hayen as the club’s next manager, ending a 67-day search that has seen at least one candidate turn the job down. The 45-year-old, currently heading up KRC Genk in Belgium’s top flight, has emerged as the overwhelming favorite with bookmakers pricing him at odds of 2/5 or 1/3.

What’s happening at Burnley

Burnley has been without a permanent manager for over two months, a period of instability that tends to suppress everything from ticket revenue to sponsorship negotiations. The club reportedly pursued Rob Edwards, who declined the offer. That left Hayen as the clear frontrunner.

Hayen’s resume is compact but impressive. He was appointed caretaker manager of Club Brugge on March 18, 2024, and promptly led the team to the Belgian championship that same season. His tenure at Brugge ended on December 8, 2025, when he was dismissed. Just two weeks later, on December 22, 2025, he landed at KRC Genk. Now, barely six months into that role, he’s apparently ready to make the jump to English football.

Tactically, Hayen favors a 4-2-3-1 formation, a system that prizes attacking creativity through a central playmaker while maintaining defensive structure.

What to watch

The immediate question is whether Hayen can extract himself from his KRC Genk contract without complications. Managerial compensation clauses in European football are notoriously variable, and Genk may not be eager to lose a coach mid-project.
