California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday unveiled the California Breakthrough Project, a new initiative aimed at modernizing government operations by partnering with leaders from the tech industry.
Executives from Ripple, Coinbase, MoonPay, Snap Inc., and others are part of the advisory group, which met for the first time on June 6 at Ripple’s headquarters. The group will focus on streamlining state processes and integrating new technologies.
“The Golden State continues to lead in efficiency, strategically implementing technologies and practices that make Californians’ lives better,” said Newsom in a statement.
“As the birthplace of modern tech, our state is uniquely positioned to bring the best and the brightest together to advance our work. We will not shy away from progress, but embrace it for the benefit of all Californians, including our state workforce,” he added.
Task force members will partner with state agencies to identify operational inefficiencies, recommend modern approaches to improve services, and ensure the process includes transparency, worker input, and ethical safeguards.
California, home to 32 of the 50 top AI companies worldwide, has already implemented several efficiency measures under Newsom’s administration, including modernizing the Department of Motor Vehicles and deploying new technologies for wildfire management.
Newsom also signed an executive order today directing state agencies to modernize processes around hiring, procurement, and contracts, while establishing an Innovative Fellows Program comprising state staff to address statewide challenges through innovative solutions.
