Canadian exporters brace for pain as new 50% US tariffs take effect

The 50% tariff wall that went up between the US and Canada on August 22 is already sending shockwaves through Canadian small and medium-sized businesses. Roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, about 5% of everything the country ships south, now carries a price tag that makes them borderline unsellable in the American market. The numbers tell a grim story A survey conducted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business between July 28 and August 6 paints a picture that’s hard to spin positively. Of the roughly 1,833 respondents, 93% were already aware the tariffs were coming. Awareness wasn’t the problem. Preparedness was. Ninety percent of those surveyed said they were concerned about the tariffs’ potential impact. Forty percent reported that their own products were directly in the crosshairs. Among that affected group, the outlook is bleak. A full 77% expect their revenue to decline. More than a third of those businesses, 35%, are forecasting losses of at least 50%. Perhaps the most telling data point: 78% of affected exporters believe their products will simply be uncompetitive in the US market once the tariffs are factored in.
