Capital One Financial has confirmed it closed more than 300 bank accounts linked to the Trump Organization back in 2021, following an extensive anti-money laundering review. The disclosure came in a court filing dated August 1, 2026, and it sheds new light on one of the most politically charged debanking disputes in recent memory. The accounts reportedly held millions of dollars across various Trump-linked entities. Capital One notified the Trump Organization of the closures in March 2021, just weeks after the January 6 Capitol riot, a timeline that the Trump family argues is not coincidental. The lawsuit and the competing narratives In March 2025, the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust and Eric Trump filed suit in Florida state court, alleging that Capital One’s decision was politically motivated. The lawsuit claims the bank engaged in “debanking,” essentially severing financial ties because of who the customer was rather than what the customer did.
