China’s CXMT emerges as potential US chip supplier, raising national security alarms

A Chinese memory chip company that most Americans have never heard of is quietly becoming one of the most consequential players in the global semiconductor market. ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, now commands roughly 7.7% of the global DRAM market, making it the world’s fourth-largest producer. And US lawmakers are calling it a “ticking time bomb.” The numbers behind the noise CXMT completed its IPO on July 27, 2026, on Shanghai’s STAR Market, raising $8.6 billion. That made it the largest IPO in Asia for the year. Shares surged 466% on their first day of trading, briefly pushing CXMT’s market capitalization past $484 billion, momentarily making it the most valuable listed company in China. State-owned investors held 36.29% of shares prior to the IPO. The company, founded in 2016 by Zhu Yiming under the name Innotron Memory, has grown with substantial government backing into a producer of advanced DDR5, LPDDR5, and LPDDR5X DRAM chips.
