Circle Internet Group just went on a shopping spree at IBM’s patent garage sale, and Wall Street noticed. The company behind the USDC stablecoin acquired over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents from IBM, a deal announced on July 27 that sent CRCL shares climbing between 3.7% and over 5% during morning trading. The move vaults Circle into the upper echelon of blockchain patent holders in the United States. What Circle actually bought The patent portfolio spans foundational blockchain technology alongside banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations. Circle plans to deploy these patents across its core product lineup: USDC, the Circle Payments Network, and the Arc blockchain platform. Sarah Wilson, Circle’s General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, framed the acquisition as a strategic enhancement that will bolster the digital finance infrastructure necessary for “Internet-native finance across global markets.” The financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
