Coinbase has appointed Rob Witoff as its new Chief Technology Officer, a move that caps a journey that started when the company was small enough to count its engineers on two hands. Witoff announced the appointment on July 27, 2026, stepping into one of the most consequential technical roles in crypto at a moment when Coinbase is actively reshaping what it looks like on the inside. From early engineer to the top technical seat Witoff first joined Coinbase in 2014, a period when the company’s infrastructure was minimal and its asset support was limited. That context matters: he didn’t inherit a finished product, he helped build the foundation. After more than a decade at the company, he took a detour to co-found Unit 410, a startup focused on institutional self-custody and staking. Coinbase acquired Unit 410 in 2021, bringing Witoff back into the fold. Most recently, he served as Coinbase’s Head of Platform, a role he stepped into on December 2, 2024.
