CoinGecko, one of the largest independent crypto data aggregators, confirmed on September 2 that it is investigating an issue causing portfolio balances to display incorrectly across its platform. Users reported discrepancies between their total portfolio values and the sum of their individual holdings, with some seeing swings of up to tens of percent in their displayed totals. What’s actually broken The problem appears to be rooted in how CoinGecko’s portfolio tracker calculates and aggregates balance data for display. Individual token holdings are showing up fine, but the total portfolio value isn’t matching the math. CoinGecko’s portfolio feature operates as a read-only tracking tool. Users can manually enter holdings or connect wallet addresses to monitor their positions across different exchanges and chains. The platform rolled out wallet monitoring functionality in March 2026, expanding beyond its earlier manual-entry-only approach. Crucially, CoinGecko does not custody any funds.
