Colombia’s World Cup opener highlights a gap in football’s crypto playbook

1 hour ago 1

Daniel Muñoz put Colombia ahead 1-0 against Uzbekistan in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener on June 18, flicking the ball home with his right foot in the 40th minute. Luis Díaz provided the assist inside a packed Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The World Cup’s crypto backdrop

The 2026 World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams, a massive expansion from the previous 32-team format. Kraken holds the title of Official Crypto Exchange Supporter for the tournament. Yet there is no specific FIFA fan token for the event.

The real action in football crypto has been happening at the team level, primarily through the Chiliz blockchain and its consumer-facing platform Socios.com. National teams like Argentina ($ARG) and Portugal ($POR) have launched fan tokens that give holders voting rights on minor team decisions, access to exclusive content, and a speculative vehicle tied to national team performance.

Colombia’s missing piece

Colombia is one of the most passionate football nations on earth, yet there is no $COL token. The closest thing Colombia has to a football-crypto connection is Millonarios FC, which launched the $MFC token back in 2021 on Socios.com. But a club token and a national team token serve very different audiences, especially during a World Cup.

When Argentina won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the $ARG fan token saw significant trading volume increases around key matches. Colombia’s lack of a comparable asset means that wave of sentiment-driven trading has nowhere to go within the Chiliz ecosystem.

What this means for investors

Teams with active fan tokens, like Argentina and Portugal, serve as direct conduits for speculative and sentimental capital. Colombia, without a token, contributes to the general atmosphere of World Cup excitement without generating a specific tradeable asset.

Colombia’s massive fanbase represents untapped demand for a fan token product. If the Colombian Football Federation were to launch a token during or shortly after a strong World Cup showing, the initial uptake could be substantial.
