China’s ruling party is tightening its grip on artificial intelligence with a regulatory framework that goes far beyond anything seen in the West. The Communist Party of China is demanding that AI models pass ideological compliance tests, mandating content labeling, and treating the technology’s risks as equivalent to natural disasters. The Cyberspace Administration of China has already been enforcing these principles with considerable force. Between April and September 2026, the agency removed over 5.61 million pieces of AI-generated content it deemed illegal or non-compliant, penalized more than 49,000 accounts, and took action against over 2,400 websites and apps.
