Constellation CEO: Existing power plants are bedrock for data centers

Constellation Energy CEO Joseph Dominguez made his position clear during the company’s Q2 2026 earnings call: the power plants already humming across the US grid are the foundation for meeting the explosive electricity demands of data centers. Not the ones on the drawing board. Not the ones stuck in permitting limbo. The ones that exist right now. The case for what’s already built Constellation controls roughly 55 GW of generation capacity, with about 22 GW of that coming from nuclear plants. Dominguez argued the economy simply cannot afford to sit around and wait for new power plants. Data center operators need reliable electricity now, and the current grid has substantial untapped capacity that can be directed their way. Peak power challenges can be managed through batteries and demand response solutions. Constellation is pursuing both grid-supplied and co-located power solutions for data center clients.
