Ethereum evolves into a cryptographic world computer, says Buterin

Vitalik Buterin has a new name for what Ethereum is becoming, and it’s not just a rebrand. In a blog post published on September 27, the Ethereum co-founder described the network’s trajectory as an evolution into a “cryptographic world computer,” a hybrid system that fuses blockchain consensus with advanced cryptographic tools, privacy layers, and decentralized off-chain computation. The post reads less like a product roadmap and more like a thesis statement for Ethereum’s next decade. Buterin argues that by 2030, the network will look almost nothing like the system he first sketched out in the early 2010s, with tunable computation scale, dramatically lower node operating demands, and privacy baked into the protocol rather than bolted on top.
