Fnatic’s CS2 roster move revives questions about crypto’s fading romance with esports

Fnatic just signed Volodymyr “mazay” Iorhachov, a 17-year-old Ukrainian rifler from Team Spirit Academy, to its CS2 roster on July 9, 2026.

The mazay signing and what it signals

Spirit Academy coach S0tF1k called mazay “the future of our academy” back in September 2025. Nine months later, a bigger organization came knocking. Mazay’s path to Fnatic wasn’t exactly a surprise for anyone paying attention. The two organizations had already crossed paths competitively, with Spirit Academy facing Fnatic during the CCT Season 2 Europe Series in February 2025.

Crypto’s vanishing act from esports sponsorships

During the 2021-2022 crypto bull run, esports was swimming in digital asset money. Fnatic’s Crypto.com partnership, worth over $15 million, was one of the splashier deals. FTX had naming rights to TSM. Coinbase was sponsoring ESL tournaments. Then the market turned. FTX collapsed in spectacular fashion. The Fnatic-Crypto.com deal, once a flagship example of crypto-esports synergy, is no longer active.

Look at the mazay announcement and you’ll find exactly zero references to blockchain, tokens, NFTs, or any crypto-adjacent branding.
