Former Google AI chief Jeff Dean reportedly launches Discovery Loop startup

Jeff Dean, the engineer often described as Google’s most important technical leader, has reportedly founded a startup called Discovery Loop alongside other high-profile Google executives. The venture will target AI-powered breakthroughs across drug discovery, chip design, and other scientific domains, according to Wired. Dean co-founded Google Brain in 2011, the internal research lab that essentially kickstarted the modern deep learning era at one of the world’s largest companies. He later rose to become Google’s Chief Scientist, serving as co-technical lead on the Gemini project, the company’s flagship multimodal AI system designed to compete with OpenAI’s GPT series. The name “Discovery Loop” itself nods to a concept gaining traction in AI research circles.
