A federal trial now underway in Oakland, California, could produce one of the largest corporate penalties in American history. Four US states are demanding up to $1.4 trillion from Meta Platforms, alleging the company deliberately engineered Facebook and Instagram to be addictive for children and teenagers. To put that number in perspective, Meta’s entire market capitalization sits at roughly $1.5 trillion. The states are essentially asking a court to fine Meta an amount equal to nearly all of its market value.
