Gemini just rolled out stop market orders on its ActiveTrader interface, giving spot traders a tool that most competing platforms have offered for years. It’s a straightforward addition, but one that fills a notable gap in the exchange’s professional trading toolkit. The feature lets users set a stop price that, once crossed by the last traded price, automatically fires off a market order. Buy stops must be placed above the current price, sell stops below it. The orders come with a 10% slippage tolerance baked in, which acts as a guardrail against getting filled at a wildly unfavorable price during sudden moves. How it works and why it matters The distinction from stop-limit orders, which Gemini has supported since November 2019, is important. A stop-limit order triggers a limit order at a specified price, meaning it might not fill at all if the market blows past your limit during a fast move. A stop market order sacrifices price precision for execution certainty.
