Google tests pilot program paying publishers for AI search contributions

Google has quietly rolled out an invitation-only program that compensates publishers when their content feeds the company’s AI-powered search features. Called the “AI contribution pilot,” the initiative covers roughly 100 publishers and represents one of the first attempts by a major tech platform to put a price tag on the content that trains and powers generative AI responses. The payout problem The pilot launched less than a year ago and primarily targets small to mid-sized publishers. Participants can view their accrued earnings through a dedicated widget in Google Search Console, which tracks how much their content contributed to AI-generated responses. What they’re finding is a vast spectrum of compensation that ranges from laughable to legitimately meaningful. Some smaller publishers have reported total earnings of less than $1,000 over several months. For many participants, the payments amount to under 0.1% of their advertising revenue.
