Haaland vs. Bellingham at the World Cup is also a meme coin moment

1 hour ago 2

Two former teammates are about to become opponents on the biggest stage in football, and the crypto market has already picked a side. Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham, who built their friendship playing together at Borussia Dortmund between 2020 and 2022, square off when England meets Norway in a 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal on July 11 in Miami.

The tokens tied to two strikers

On the Solana blockchain, a meme token called $HAALAND exists, with a reported market cap fluctuating between $8,000 and $43,000 during Haaland’s scoring runs.

The $JUDE token, tied to Bellingham’s profile, tells a more cautionary story. Despite Bellingham delivering two goals scored in under two minutes, the unofficial token collapsed approximately 98% from its peak.

Neither Haaland nor Bellingham has confirmed any endorsement or official connection to these tokens.

On the NFT side, a one-of-a-kind Sorare Haaland NFT previously sold for 265.1 ETH, which at the time of the sale was valued somewhere between $600,000 and $750,000. That transaction involved a licensed digital collectible platform, scarcity by design, and a verifiable transaction record.

What investors should actually take from this

Athlete meme tokens carry no protocol revenue, no staking mechanism, no governance function, and no official relationship between the token and the athlete whose name it carries. The $HAALAND token’s movement during scoring streaks reflects short-term sentiment capture, but the $JUDE collapse illustrates the asymmetry: upside is capped by how fast sentiment fades, while downside can be nearly total.

The licensed NFT market, where platforms like Sorare operate with actual scarcity, league partnerships, and verifiable provenance, represents a structurally distinct category. The 265.1 ETH Haaland sale is an outlier, but it points toward a market with at least some structural floor, unlike tokens that can go to zero the morning after a penalty shootout.
