Harvard University has revealed a $2.2 billion position in SpaceX, now trading publicly under the ticker SPCX. The disclosure came in the wake of SpaceX’s IPO on June 11, which priced shares at $135 and valued the company at roughly $1.8 trillion, making it one of the largest public debuts in history. From private bet to public windfall Harvard’s stake didn’t materialize overnight. The university’s endowment had built a substantial pre-IPO position in SpaceX during the company’s years as a private company. The IPO simply converted that private equity holding into something with a ticker symbol and a daily price chart. Multiple university endowments held significant positions in SpaceX before it went public, effectively converting illiquid private shares into tradable public equity at listing. For these endowments, the IPO wasn’t a buying opportunity. It was a liquidity event for positions they’d been sitting on for years. Harvard isn’t alone in the disclosure wave. BlackRock has also shown up in recent filings with a meaningful SPCX position.
