Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing is preparing to formally consult stakeholders on extending equity trading hours, a move that would mark the first revision to the city’s trading schedule in 14 years. The exchange plans to publish a discussion paper outlining the potential benefits and drawbacks of the proposals while soliciting input from brokers, investors, and other market participants. What’s actually on the table Hong Kong’s current equity trading schedule runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon, takes a one-hour lunch break, then resumes from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Proposals discussed internally with brokers in July 2026 include pushing the market open earlier to 9:00 a.m. and scrapping the lunch break entirely. HKEX CEO Bonnie Chan Yi-ting has acknowledged the evaluations are ongoing but hasn’t committed to a specific timeline for implementation. She has, however, pointed out that HKEX’s derivatives market already trades until 3:00 a.m., suggesting the exchange’s infrastructure can handle extended hours when the business case is clear.
