AI agents talk to themselves a lot. A new research paper suggests they could do most of that talking silently, and save a lot of money in the process. The preprint, titled “Hybrid Reasoning Agents,” introduces a framework called HybridAgents. It reports compute cost reductions of roughly 63% to 73%, while also outperforming the agents it was benchmarked against. What HybridAgents actually does HybridAgents lets an agent toggle between two modes. In latent mode, the model reasons internally, without decoding its thoughts into text. In text mode, it produces readable output, which is reserved for external actions like calling tools or delivering final answers. The paper, submitted on October 13, 2026 under arXiv:2610.18861, lists authors including Jiaru Zou of Stanford and Together AI. The design leans on several components: HybridLink module: handles the switch between latent and text reasoning. Continuous working memory: lets the agent keep context across different interactions. HybridSFT and HybridRL: adapted post-training methods that build on supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning. The latent reasoning is not a black box. According to the research, it can be displayed...
