The IEM Cologne Major 2026, one of the most prestigious events on the Counter-Strike 2 calendar, has reached its semifinal stage. With three days left in a tournament that began on June 2, the field of 32 teams has been whittled down to a handful of contenders battling for the trophy at Cologne’s Lanxess Arena.
The quarterfinals delivered drama. FURIA pulled off a reverse sweep against 9z, while Aurora advanced past BetBoom to set up the first semifinal bracket. The second half of the draw features G2 facing Team Spirit on one side and Falcons meeting defending champions Team Vitality on the other.
The semifinal bracket and what’s at stake
Both semifinals are scheduled for June 20. The first match, kicking off at 15:45 CET, pits Aurora against FURIA. The second semifinal begins at 19:00 CET and features the winner of G2 versus Team Spirit against whoever emerges from the Falcons-Vitality matchup.
A format change for this Major has added an extra layer of intensity. All Stage 3 matches have been upgraded to best-of-three, eliminating the single-map variance that has historically produced fluky upsets in earlier rounds.
The playoffs run from June 18 through June 21, meaning the grand final lands on the last day of a nearly three-week tournament. The entire event spans 20 days.
Crypto’s disappearing act from esports
There are no significant cryptocurrency sponsorships tied to this event. Traditional gambling operators have stepped in to fill the void, mirroring a broader trend across professional gaming where regulatory scrutiny and reputational fallout from high-profile crypto collapses have made tournament organizers and teams more cautious about who writes the checks.
The tournament does feature in-game mechanics involving tokens that can be redeemed for virtual stickers, a long-standing part of Counter-Strike’s economy. These items function more like digital trading cards than speculative assets and are clearly delineated from traditional cryptocurrencies.
ESL and Valve, who jointly organize the Major, appear to have made a deliberate choice to keep the tournament’s brand partnerships rooted in more established commercial categories.
What this means for investors
Traditional gambling operators are well-positioned to capitalize. They have regulatory frameworks already in place, established compliance departments, and experience navigating the complex web of advertising rules that vary by jurisdiction. Counter-Strike has always had a complicated relationship with gambling, from the skin-betting scandals of the mid-2010s to ongoing debates about loot box mechanics.
