Indonesia is on the verge of a milestone that’s been 73 years in the making. President Prabowo Subianto nominated Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate for governor of Bank Indonesia on August 10, positioning her to become the first woman to permanently lead the central bank since its founding in 1953. The nomination follows the resignation of Perry Warjiyo, who stepped down on July 27 after serving as governor since May 2018. Damayanti has been running the show as acting governor since his departure, and if parliament confirms her, the “acting” part of her title gets dropped for good. A straight path to confirmation The parliamentary process is moving fast. A fit-and-proper test is scheduled for August 13, with a plenary vote expected on August 14.
