Isabel Schnabel set to leave ECB for IMF before term ends

Isabel Schnabel, one of the European Central Bank’s most influential voices on inflation and interest rates, is planning to leave her seat on the ECB’s Executive Board to take a position at the International Monetary Fund. Her current eight-year, non-renewable term doesn’t expire until December 31, 2027, making this a mid-stream exit from one of the most consequential roles in global central banking. The timing is notable. Euro-area inflation has been hovering around 2.9%, still meaningfully above the ECB’s 2% target. Schnabel has been among the loudest advocates for keeping rates elevated to close that gap.
