Israeli espionage charges reveal Iran’s crypto-funded spy recruitment pipeline

For about the price of a mid-range laptop, Iranian intelligence allegedly convinced a young American living in Israel to become a spy. The compensation method of choice: cryptocurrency. Israeli authorities indicted Eli Lavon, a 21-year-old US citizen, on July 3 on espionage charges tied to activities conducted on behalf of Iranian intelligence. Lavon was arrested on June 9 and now faces 16 charges, including two counts of contact with a foreign agent. According to the indictment, Iranian operatives found him through Telegram job advertisements in late 2025 and compensated him with approximately $1,379 in cryptocurrency for completing assignments that included low-level surveillance and sending signaling messages. A pattern, not an anomaly Lavon’s case is the first time a US national has been prosecuted in Israel’s broader crackdown on Iran-linked espionage. Since 2023, at least 60 Israelis have been indicted for similar espionage activities.
