Italy drops Pirlo as head coach after backlash over Russian betting firm ties

Andrea Pirlo, one of the most elegant midfielders to ever play the game, has been removed from consideration as Italy’s national football coach after the Italian Football Federation, known as the FIGC, abandoned his appointment amid mounting criticism over his commercial relationship with a Russian betting company. Pirlo had been widely reported as the frontrunner to take charge of the Azzurri heading into the summer of 2026. The FIGC paused the appointment process around July 25-26, 2026, and ultimately did not proceed with a formal offer. The sticking point was Pirlo’s role as global ambassador for Fonbet, a Russian sports betting firm he signed with in October 2025 while serving as head coach of United FC in the UAE Pro League. United FC is owned by Sergey Lomakin, who holds financial interests in Fonbet. Pirlo’s club employer and his personal sponsor are financially connected, which is exactly the kind of entanglement a national football federation does not want to inherit.
