Jose Mourinho schedules talks with wantaway Real Madrid star Dani Ceballos

Jose Mourinho is barely through the door at Real Madrid and already the inbox is full. The Portuguese coach, who returned to the Bernabeu in May 2026 to replace interim manager Álvaro Arbeloa, is now scheduling direct talks with midfielder Dani Ceballos, who has made clear he wants out.

Ceballos, 29, is pushing for a free transfer exit. The wrinkle: his contract runs until 2027, which means Madrid holds the cards.

The situation on the ground

Mourinho came back to Madrid through a process brokered in part by his agent Jorge Mendes, stepping into a club that needed direction after a difficult period under Arbeloa. His brief, from the start, has been a full squad rebuild with emphasis on shoring up defense and midfield.

That rebuild has already produced a clear-out list. Dani Carvajal and David Alaba are not expected to receive contract extensions. Ferland Mendy is also outside Mourinho’s future plans.

Ceballos sits in a more complicated position. He is not being shown the door in the same way as those three, but he is not being handed a central role either. The midfielder has apparently decided he would rather force the issue himself, requesting a free transfer rather than waiting to see how the season shapes up under the new manager.

Camavinga rumors and the bigger picture

The Ceballos situation is not the only complicated conversation happening inside Valdebebas right now. Reports have circulated linking Eduardo Camavinga to a potential sale, with the suggestion that Madrid might need to move players to fund new signings. Camavinga’s representatives have denied any intention to leave.

Mourinho himself offered a small but telling comment in June 2026, publicly stating he wants Madrid players participating in the 2026 World Cup to exit the tournament early, giving them time to return for pre-season preparations.

What Mourinho’s return means for player power at the club

Mourinho’s first stint at Real Madrid, from 2010 to 2013, was famously turbulent. His relationships with senior players were complicated, his public comments sometimes destabilizing, and his exit was not exactly a mutual celebration.

For clubs watching Ceballos, a 29-year-old midfielder with a year left on his deal is an attractive option if Madrid eventually agrees to a discounted sale or negotiated termination. Spanish clubs in particular, given his history with Real Betis on loan, would likely be interested.
