Leicester City Football Club explores potential sale amid mounting financial pressures

1 hour ago 1

The Thai family that owns Leicester City Football Club, the club behind one of the greatest underdog stories in sports history, is reportedly exploring a potential sale. The Srivaddhanaprabha family, which acquired the club in 2010 through Asia Football Investments, is said to be in early-stage discussions about offloading the English football club.

A balance sheet under pressure

Leicester’s finances tell a story that has become uncomfortably common in English football. The club reportedly posted a pre-tax loss of £71.1 million in a recent fiscal year.

In 2025, the club sold multiple players for over £40 million in an effort to shore up its balance sheet.

The Srivaddhanaprabha family has maintained approximately 55% ownership of the club following the tragic death of founder Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in a helicopter crash at the club’s stadium in 2018. His son, Aiyawatt “Top” Srivaddhanaprabha, has since taken the lead in managing operations.

From fairy tale to fire sale?

Leicester’s 2015/16 Premier League triumph remains one of the most improbable achievements in the history of professional sports. A club that had been playing in England’s second tier just two seasons earlier somehow beat out Manchester City, Chelsea, and the rest of the Premier League’s financial heavyweights.

The family’s decision to explore a sale was reported by the Financial Times among other outlets on July 22, 2026.
