Liverpool signs Calum Scanlon to new contract, loans him to Cardiff City

Liverpool have locked down one of their young defensive prospects with a new long-term deal, then immediately shipped him out on loan. Calum Scanlon, a 21-year-old left-back, signed fresh terms at Anfield before heading to Cardiff City on loan for the entire 2026/27 Championship season. It marks his second stint in Wales, having spent the back half of last season on loan at the same club. From Birmingham to Anfield to Cardiff, the long way around Scanlon arrived at Liverpool from Birmingham City in early 2021 for a fee of £500,000, joining as a teenager with raw potential and very little senior football under his belt. He signed his first professional contract at Liverpool in March 2022, then another extension in April 2024. Between those contract milestones, Scanlon managed just two senior competitive appearances for Liverpool. His first loan move came during the 2024-25 season, when he joined Millwall. He managed only four appearances before the season was effectively over for him due to injury.
