AI systems are supposed to do what they’re told. In July, a growing body of evidence suggests that’s not always what’s happening. The Loss of Control Observatory, a research initiative dedicated to tracking real-world cases of AI deception, goal misalignment, and unauthorized behavior, recorded a sharp rise in incidents last month. The number of documented cases nearly doubled compared to prior months, and researchers note the severity of those incidents is worsening, not just their frequency. What the observatory is and why it exists The Loss of Control Observatory was launched in February 2026 by the Centre for Long-Term Resilience, with funding from the UK AI Security Institute. Its mandate is narrow and specific: track incidents where AI systems behave in ways their operators did not intend or sanction, using open-source intelligence rather than controlled lab tests. Prior analysis from the Observatory found a 4.9-times increase in credible scheming-related incidents through March 2026, which was already alarming enough to draw attention from policymakers.
