Manchester City has agreed to sign teenage winger Jeremy Monga from Leicester City in a deal worth up to £12.5 million. The 16-year-old, who made his Premier League debut at just 15 years and 271 days old, is considered one of England’s brightest young prospects.
How City beat Arsenal to the punch
Arsenal had been in extended discussions with Leicester over Monga, but ultimately pulled out over concerns about the player’s valuation. Manchester City swooped in and agreed to the fee.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported the move as being very close to completion as of July 3, 2026. Monga is expected to sign his first professional contract around July 10, 2026, which would trigger payment for the transfer.
The fee, reported in the range of £10 million to £12.5 million, would represent a record for Leicester in terms of an academy player departure. Monga holds both English and Zambian nationality and plays as a winger. His Premier League debut at 15 made him one of the youngest players to ever feature in the competition.
The crypto layer underneath football finance
Manchester City operates a fan token, the CITY token, launched in 2021 through the Socios.com platform built on the Chiliz blockchain. While Monga’s transfer itself doesn’t involve any token-related mechanics, it exists within a financial ecosystem where crypto is increasingly embedded. Leicester City itself has had partnerships with crypto betting companies.
Young players and the regulatory tightrope
Young players like Monga are protected from being used in sponsorship promotions linked to crypto betting. For crypto companies sponsoring football clubs, this means navigating an increasingly complex landscape: you can plaster your logo on a stadium or a first-team jersey, but using a 16-year-old academy signing to promote a token or a betting platform is off limits.
