Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vítek wants out, and it highlights a growing problem in football’s talent pipeline

Radek Vítek, a 22-year-old goalkeeper under contract at Manchester United until June 2028, has publicly stated his desire to leave the club. His reasoning is straightforward: he wants to be a number one somewhere, not a perpetual understudy at one of football’s biggest institutions.

“I feel ready to go somewhere to be number one,” Vítek said on July 19.

The loan carousel and the value question

Vítek joined Manchester United from Czech club Sigma Olomouc back in 2020, when he was just 16. Vítek has spent time on loan at Accrington Stanley in 2024 and Austria’s Blau-Weiß Linz from 2024 to 2025.

His estimated market value currently sits at around €6 million. That’s a modest number for a Premier League club’s books, but it represents real capital tied up in a player who isn’t contributing to the first team.

Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation has been in flux, with André Onana heading out on a season-long loan to Trabzonspor, the arrival of Karl Darlow on a free transfer, and the unexpected return of Onana from his loan spell, adding further competition to an already congested position. When the player himself is publicly saying he needs to leave, the internal signals are pretty clear.

What to watch from here

The most likely outcome is a permanent transfer or another loan with an option to buy. Vítek’s €6 million valuation is low enough that several clubs across Europe’s top leagues and strong second divisions could afford him without breaking the bank.

A player who tells the world he wants out rarely fetches top dollar. The club will want to recoup their development investment, but they also don’t want a discontented player lingering in the squad.
