Manchester United secures signings of Mbeumo and Šeško amid competition

Manchester United spent roughly £140 million last summer to sign Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško, two of European football’s most coveted attackers. Both players have already crossed the 10-goal mark in the Premier League this season.

Šeško arrived from RB Leipzig in August 2025 in a deal valued at £74 million, with guaranteed payments of £66.3 million plus potential add-ons. Mbeumo’s move from Brentford cost £65 million plus £6 million in add-ons. Matheus Cunha also joined in the same window, giving United three new attacking options who have each netted more than 10 goals this Premier League campaign.

La Liga came knocking, United said no

La Liga clubs made formal transfer inquiries about Šeško as recently as June 2026, and Manchester United flatly rejected them. The 22-year-old Slovenian striker is considered central to the club’s long-term project.

The crypto angle: fan tokens and meme coins

Manchester United operates the MUFC fan token within the Socios.com/Chiliz ecosystem, a digital asset designed to give holders voting rights on minor club decisions and access to exclusive content.

Fan tokens sit in an awkward corner of the crypto market. They’re tied to brand loyalty rather than on-chain utility or protocol revenue. The MUFC token doesn’t move because Šeško scored a hat trick, and it doesn’t dump because the team loses. Its value proposition is commercial engagement, not financial correlation to sporting performance.

Following the high-profile signings, tokens named $MBEUMO and $SESKO were launched on Solana. Both tokens displayed negligible trading activity and minimal market interest.

What this means for investors

Fan tokens like MUFC are fundamentally marketing tools. They give Chiliz a revenue stream and give fans a sense of participation, but they don’t represent ownership, dividends, or any claim on the club’s financial performance. Their price action tends to correlate more with broader crypto market sentiment and promotional campaigns than with anything happening on a football pitch.

For anyone holding MUFC tokens or considering entry, the key variable to watch isn’t Manchester United’s league position. It’s the broader trajectory of the Chiliz ecosystem, including partnerships, platform upgrades, and whether fan tokens as a category gain regulatory clarity or face new restrictions across European markets.
