Manchester United have set their sights on Gilberto Mora, a 17-year-old Mexican attacking midfielder who has spent the past year shattering records at a pace that makes most teenage prodigies look like late bloomers.
Mora, who plays for Club Tijuana in Liga MX, became the youngest goalscorer in the league’s history and the youngest player to debut for Mexico’s senior national team. He also holds the distinction of being the youngest Mexican and North American player to appear in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. That’s a lot of “youngest ever” milestones for someone born in October 2008.
A prospect drawing a crowd
Manchester United’s interest isn’t exactly a secret, and it isn’t exclusive either. Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Manchester City are all reportedly monitoring Mora.
United’s interest reportedly began as early as 2025 and intensified around the World Cup, where Mora’s performances put him firmly on the European radar.
Tijuana’s power move
On June 9, 2026, Mora signed a three-year contract extension with Tijuana, running through June 2029. The deal came with the No. 10 shirt and included a structured release clause projected to be over €20 million, giving Tijuana significant leverage in any future negotiations.
At his current stage, Mora has been valued at approximately €10 million. The gap between his market value and his release clause represents Tijuana’s insurance policy. Any European club that wants to pry him away will need to pay a premium, not just fair market value.
What this means for United’s transfer strategy
Manchester United’s interest in Mora fits a pattern. The club has increasingly prioritized younger signings, players who can grow into world-class performers rather than arrive as finished products with price tags to match.
The release clause of over €20 million would represent a meaningful investment, but not a backbreaking one for a club of United’s financial scale.
With Mora’s contract running until 2029, there’s no urgency for Tijuana to sell. That gives them the upper hand in negotiations and means any deal would likely happen on their terms.
