Meta disrupts Iran-linked network using AI to impersonate Americans across Facebook and Instagram

Meta just pulled the plug on a network of fake accounts run by an Iranian operation that used artificial intelligence to create convincing American personas and flood Facebook and Instagram with political content. The company shared the findings with Axios ahead of publishing its Adversarial Threat Report for the first half of 2026. The network consisted of 294 Instagram accounts, 8 Facebook accounts, and 2 Pages. Collectively, the Instagram accounts racked up roughly 41,000 followers, though actual engagement with real users remained remarkably low. How the operation worked The network employed a two-tier architecture with “creators,” accounts built around highly detailed AI-generated personas complete with complex backstories, and “amplifiers,” accounts designed to mimic grassroots movements.
