Two of the eight most valuable tech companies in the world now hold Bitcoin as a treasury asset. That’s the stat Michael Saylor, Executive Chairman of Strategy, highlighted on June 13 when he noted that 25% of the so-called Mag8 group carries BTC on their balance sheets.
The trigger was SpaceX’s historic IPO, which disclosed 18,712 BTC in its filing documentation. That figure positions Elon Musk’s rocket company as one of the largest public corporate Bitcoin holders right out of the gate. The other Mag8 member with Bitcoin exposure, Tesla, has held 11,509 BTC since 2021.
The Mag8 and the Bitcoin question
The Magnificent 8 is a newer framing of the mega-cap tech cohort that has driven public equity markets for years. The group includes Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, Tesla, and now SpaceX following its public listing.
Of those eight, only Tesla and SpaceX have disclosed Bitcoin on their balance sheets. Combined, they hold 30,221 BTC.
The remaining six, Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, and Nvidia, have not publicly disclosed any Bitcoin holdings.
Strategy’s shadow over corporate Bitcoin
No conversation about corporate Bitcoin adoption happens without mentioning Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy. The company Saylor built into the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holder now possesses roughly 843,000 BTC. That’s approximately 4% of Bitcoin’s total supply, sitting on the balance sheet of a single publicly traded firm.
Phong Le, CEO of Strategy, reinforced Saylor’s framing around the SpaceX IPO, pointing to the Mag8 evolution as evidence that major public companies increasingly view Bitcoin as a durable asset in volatile macro environments.
What this means for investors
According to estimates from Bernstein, public companies collectively own approximately 3.4% of the total Bitcoin supply. That’s a meaningful chunk of an asset with a fixed 21 million coin cap.
The risk side of this equation is straightforward. Bitcoin remains volatile. Tesla navigated this once before when it briefly sold a portion of its holdings in 2022, only to hold steady afterward.
Microsoft shareholders have previously voted on Bitcoin treasury proposals.
