Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella wants advanced AI to come with something every car already has: a brake pedal. In a post on X on October 10, 2026, Nadella called for a new “trust architecture” for frontier AI systems. At its center is an “emergency brake” that would let authorized personnel pause or shut down an AI model while it is in the middle of a task. What Nadella actually proposed The emergency brake is the headline feature. Authorized users would be able to halt a model mid-operation rather than waiting for it to finish whatever it started. That matters more than it sounds. Older chatbots answered a question and stopped. Newer “agentic” systems can take a string of actions on their own, so the ability to interrupt them partway through becomes a real safety need. The more striking part is how Nadella wants companies to think about these models. He argued that advanced AI should be treated as if it were already compromised, applying the same approach used for insider threats. Two other pieces round out the framework: Tamper-proof, human-readable logs recording what AI systems actually do, so the paper trail cannot be quietly edited and people can understand it without a decoder r...
